A MESSAGE FROM GARY:

I define improvisation in various ways. I employ the definition that works best at a given time.

IMPROVISATION IS A PROCESS OF RESPONDING TO ACCIDENTS.

I was an actor before I was an improviser. I was an improviser before I was a teacher. A lyric from a Waylon Jennings song reads, "It's not supposed to be that way." I wasn't supposed to teach.

My college counseler, "Become an actor? Where will you work? Be a teacher." My stomach churned at the suggestion. Why would I spend years developing my skills in order to turn hard earned knowledge over to others? I WANT THIS FOR ME.

In 1972 my acting career was on track. I had been a performing member of THE COMMITTEE, the best improvisational company anywhere, and I was represented by COMPASS MANAGEMENT, whose client list consisted of actors who have since become some of the world's biggest stars. I WOULD BE A STAR.

Circumstance intervened. I began to teach... albeit temporarily. Teaching became directing. Directing became THE GROUNDLINGS. Choices were made. My work continued and expanded beyond THE GROUNDLINGS.

I have been blessed with good health most of my life. I come from good, hearty, All American "redneck" stock. I wake up every morning surprised by my present condition. It's not supposed to be this way.

I have made a modest living teaching, directing and performing all over America. I've managed to pay the bills that support my work.

You who have donated to me are saving my life. Receiving love from others has always been difficult for me. I am hearing from so many people who are showing me how I've contributed to their lives, not just their artistic lives, but their offstage lives as well.

In New York I was having lunch with one of my students, when she suddenly blurted, out of context, "You are rich." As my financial life was in chaos, the words shocked me for an instant. She explained what she meant, and tonight, because of you, I understand in a most profound way that I AM RICH beyond any kind of wealth I ever imagined. The beautifully thought out words being sent to me everyday are more fulfilling, and more rewarding, than anything I ever imagined when I set out to be "a star."

Thank you all my friends, near and far, through all the years, for your friendship and support and for your generous contributions to me.

You have taught me to receive.

Love To All,

Gary Austin

ABOUT GARY:   Gary Austin, founder of the Groundlings, has multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood.  He is very open about it and his prognosis is good. But he needs a stem cell transplant, a procedure that will lay him up for two months starting at the end of August.

Gary has dedicated his life to teaching, and this layoff will be very hard on him financially. As two friends of Gary’s who have also been lucky enough to study with him, we are producing this benefit, in association with the Groundlings, to help Gary offset expenses during his recovery.
